Lenticular printing is a new form that is taking over the world. The word ‘lenticular’ means ‘pertaining to lenses,’ and lenticules are the plastic lenses that create an impression of dimensional in-depth imaging. Lenticular printing is the process of adding depth or motion to a printed display by placing the lenticules over a 2-dimensional print. Doing this allows the viewer’s eye to view alternating sections of multiple images concurrently. The 3D lenticular print cost varies depending upon several factors, which we will see later. Lenticular printing is adaptable to many types of installation and uses without needing any special equipment.
The lenticular lenses are made of extruded clear plastic lenticules running vertically. These may range from 40 lines per inch to 150 lines per inch. The lenticules reveal only portions of an interlaced image at a time, allowing the images, which are composed of two or more graphics interlaced together, to convey depth and motion. This effect is dependent on the angles of the viewer’s eyes and how the viewer is viewing the piece.
The images must be prepared in a certain way to obtain the desired results. The designer uses a software program to slice the images into strips and interlaces all the photos together in a repeating pattern. The width of the strips is determined by the lenticular lens that will be used and the printing device’s resolution.
Lenticular effects are of two types, animation, and 3D. The 3D lenticular effects create the illusion of depth by positioning visual elements on different spatial planes. The animation lenticular effects play image frames like a motion picture projector and can comprise computer-generated animation, motion picture film, or time-lapse photography.
The animation effects are further divided into three more categories: zoom, morph, and flip. Zoom forces the visual elements to be propelled forward or jump out toward the view. It is great for focusing the attention of viewers. The flip element turns the visual elements of an image on and off. This grants it the ability for an image to completely change to another. The morph element transforms a visual component into another and is a great way to show a retroactive comparison. Apart from these three effects, a combination of all these effects is also used.
The best way to look for a good lenticular printing service is by looking at their past work. The 3D lenticular print cost depends on factors like the types of finishes, effects, and quantity.
First, come up with a concept, gather all the content needed to produce your design, and then storyboard your concept. Avoid an extremely white or light-colored background, an overly complex animation, and a fancy font style. Create a storyboard that will help convey how the lenticular layers will play off each other. Lastly, collect all your images into a single Photoshop file.
